Can I Choose My Own Seat?

Here at TrainSplit, a lot of people ask us if they can choose their own seat, rather than have the computer assign one for them.

The answer is YES. Provided that the train company allows seat reservations, we can show you a seat map of the train and you can choose the seat you want. Want a table? Maybe a window? Perhaps looking for which coach is quietest? Or maybe you know a specific seat that’s your favourite?

And YES – this works with split ticketing. Even if you split your tickets, you can usually still select the same seat for the entire journey. No more having to swap seats half way through.

Yesterday I booked two return tickets for June 23rd from Peterborough to Tiverton Parkway and the computer allocated us our seats which were not together. I tried to click on Seat Selection so we could book seats together but the facility was not available. Is there anything I can do now?

Sorry about that. We’re having real problems with seating at the moment because the reservation systems have been set for social distancing. The good news is that it looks like there’s going to be a fix soon, but I know that doesn’t help you.
However, because seats have been spaced for social distancing, you’ll find that the seats next to the reservations you have will be empty (they can’t be reserved) so it’ll be fine just to sit in them anyway.

We are husband and wife who will be travelling together and want to book table seats facing each other. It doesn’t appear to be possible. Can you help? Thank you

The train companies won’t allow specific seat selection like this because of social distancing. You should get two seats close to each other automatically, if it’s possible, but in reality it will be fine for you to use one of the reserved seats and just sit in the facing seat (which won’t be reserved because of social distancing).

Having looked at this again (thanks for your advice, by the way), I find the option to choose your tickets is no longer appearing. Is this a glitch or am I missing something?

We removed it for journeys with more than one person because it was unusable with the current social distancing. That’s because the train companies are starting to allow reservations together, but only when they are booked together. We can’t move the seats afterwards once this is done. In discussions with customers, the vast majority preferred to be sat together than to have the ability to change seats (which wouldn’t be together).

Bookings for single travellers can still use the seat selector. Once social distancing measures are abandoned, we’ll be able to restore it.
